About us

We started with a well-worn map and a lot of forest time

Driftwild grew out of five years spent walking the ridgelines around Chiang Mai — first as a hobby, then as a proper operation. The idea was simple: a booking platform that keeps group sizes small, puts local guides front and centre, and doesn't dress the experience up in superlatives.

We work with three guide families based in the Suthep and Mae Sa valleys who know these trails in a way that GPS tracks can't replicate. You'll get a route briefing before you set off, a packed lunch that doesn't taste like cardboard, and a pickup that arrives when it says it will. That's the whole pitch — no fluff, just the forest.

Why Driftwild

A few things people tell us matter

We didn't arrive at these by committee. They're what keeps people coming back — or what they mention when they recommend us.

Groups capped at eight

Eight people is the ceiling on every departure. The pace stays manageable, the guide stays audible, and the trail doesn't feel crowded.

Pick-up is on time

We collect you from Nimmanhaemin Road or your accommodation in central Chiang Mai. When the booking says 7:00, the driver is there at 6:55.

Local families, local wages

Every guide is from the Suthep or Mae Sa area. The money stays in the valley, which is how it should work.

On the trail

Familiar country, seen differently

The Doi Suthep foothills are a 25-minute drive from Nimmanhaemin Road, but most visitors never walk them properly. The day-trek route skirts monastery walls, crosses a couple of seasonal streams, and opens onto a viewpoint that looks back over the city — worth the climb for that alone.

The lodge

Somewhere that slows you down

The ecolodge is a 45-minute drive north of Chiang Mai, set on a bend in the Mae Sa river. Rooms are timber and fabric — ceiling fans, good light, and mosquito nets that actually work. Breakfast runs until nine. The open-air lounge is the kind of place you sit down in and lose two hours without noticing.

Gear rental

Three days of well-maintained kit

The rental bundle covers a SUP with paddle and leash, trekking poles, a headlamp, and a 10-litre dry bag. Everything is cleaned and function-checked before collection. You'll get five minutes at pickup to adjust the pole lengths and make sure the board holds pressure — then it's yours for the next 72 hours.

How we operate

The basics, done carefully

We're not the biggest outdoor operator in Chiang Mai, and that's deliberate. Smaller means we can be precise about the things that matter.

Safety briefing included

Every departure opens with a 10-minute route and safety rundown. First-aid kit and emergency contact numbers are carried by the guide.

You'll know exactly where you're going

Route maps are sent 48 hours before departure. The trail descriptions are honest about grade and distance — no surprises on the day.

Responsive support

Reach us by phone or email before and after your trip. Queries during booking hours get a response within a few hours.

Clear cancellation terms

Cancellation and rescheduling windows are written plainly in the booking confirmation — no small print that changes the picture.

Our approach

How we think about this work

Depth over range

Three offerings, done properly. We'd rather know one trail intimately than list twenty and know none of them well.

Low impact by design

Small groups, pack-in pack-out, and meals sourced locally. The forest is the product — looking after it is non-negotiable.

Honest information

Difficulty ratings, weather notes, and what's actually included in the price — written clearly, not buried or softened.

★★★★★

"The guide Nong stopped at every interesting plant and explained what it was used for. That's the kind of thing you don't get from a self-guided walk. The lunch spot — a little clearing with a river view — was worth the climb on its own."

★★★★★

"Two nights at the lodge was exactly what I needed between Bangkok and the next leg. Quiet, clean, the breakfast rice soup was better than anything on the main road. The walking loop on the second morning took about 90 minutes and was clearly well-maintained."

★★★★☆

"Rented the gear bundle for three days. The SUP was in genuinely good shape — no slow leaks, fins properly aligned. The dry bag saved my camera on day two. The guy at pickup spent about ten minutes going through everything without being rushed, which I appreciated."

Common questions

Before you book

What fitness level is the day trek suited to?
The Doi Suthep foothills route covers around 10–12 km with about 350 m of elevation gain. People who walk regularly and don't mind a steady climb manage it without difficulty. We'd describe it as moderate — not technically demanding, but not flat either. If you're unsure, send us a note and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a good fit.
Where does the trek depart from?
Pickup is from 142 Nimmanhaemin Road (our base) at 7:00 AM, with a second stop near the Nimman area if needed. The drive to the trailhead is around 25 minutes. You'll be dropped back at the same location in the late afternoon.
What's the weather like, and can trips be cancelled for rain?
Chiang Mai's rainy season runs roughly June–October. Trails are walkable in light rain and we operate through it. In the event of a serious weather advisory or unsafe trail conditions, we'll contact you at least 24 hours before departure to discuss rescheduling. The dry season (November–April) is the most popular time — warmer, clearer views.
Can I book just the lodge stay without a trek?
Yes. The ecolodge stay is offered as a standalone, and many guests use it exactly that way — a quiet base with the self-guided walking loops nearby. You don't need to combine it with the guided trek, though some people do.
How do I return the gear rental?
Return is to our Nimmanhaemin Road base, on the afternoon of day three — any time before 6:00 PM. If you need to extend by a day, message us and we'll check availability. Equipment should come back reasonably clean; we handle the full wash and check.
How is my booking information handled?
We collect only the details needed to arrange your booking — name, contact information, and trip preferences. We don't sell or share personal data with third parties for marketing. Full details are in our Privacy Statement.
